Walmer Castle


Originally built by Henry VIII to repel invaders, Walmer Castle and Gardens has been loyally guarding England’s south east coast since 1538.

The castle is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, who was originally the protector of England’s cross channel trade route. It has been an official home to many famous Lords Warden include former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and the first Duke of Wellington. The Duke of Wellington, best known for his famous victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, lived at the castle for 23 years.

Quietly transformed over the years into an elegantly stately residence with glorious gardens, Walmer Castle and Gardens has more recently been home to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who visited annually

Walmer castle can accomodate 30 guests for an intimate indoor wedding ceremony, and 150 guests for an outdoor ceremony in the picturesque Queen Mother’s Garden. A marquee can be erected on the Oval Lawn which will allow 200 guests to dine, or 300 guests for a drinks reception.
